To be fair, I got this tree from Steve (omotm) 16 days ago that already had a couple of large figs started. The figs continued to swell and finally ripened. It's a first year tree, so was not expecting much.

I think I should have picked it yesterday instead of this morning. It had about half a dozen of those really tiny black ants hanging out around the gaping eye, having coffee, snaking on fig...

After cutting it open, I only found a few more ant's in the eye. It looks spoiled just around the eye, but doesn't look like they ants got into the interior. I just cut the spoiled part away.

It tasted a little bit bland to me. Slight figgy taste, a little bit sweet. Texture was good. Crunchy seeds. I'm sure it'll be better in a year or two.

The eye on this was around 3/16" to 1/4" wide.

Good looking fig, the taste will probably improve with age.  You gotta love a guy that gives trees with figs so close to being ready, Thx Steve.

I agree, Danny.  Steve is very generous.  The KMRK Dark that I got from him was pretty good.  Good looking fig, James.  I hope it gets better over the next year or two.

Here's the 2nd fig from that same tree.  I felt pretty soft, but not showing the brown spots like the first one.  It came off easy.  This one only had a few ants in the eye.  It looked much better inside than the first one too and tasted better.  Slightly sweet and just a little figgy.  I think the first one was just a little too ripe.   I'm looking forward to when this tree is a few years old.

James,
Thanks for posting pictures and commentary.
I have never seen a Krmklight at that stage of ripeness. I would guess that your high daytime temperatures help. How large is the eye? and Is it fully open? Thanks.

I have had no ants around my potted figs after sprinkling my used coffee grounds in the top of the containers and on the surrounding ground. I did find a few ant colonies in several pots, that were in an isolated area, but once treated with coffee, they disappeared.

I have used the coffee grounds and I also got some ant chalk from Lowes.  I don't know if there really is a difference between it and regular chalk, but I haven't had any ants climbing the stalks or on the leaves since I started using it.  They still get IN the pots though.  I have a kmrk light rooting right now. Maybe next year I'll be able to sample the figs from it.

The eye was about 5mm wide and deep. But looked like there was no access into the center of the fruit.
