Before last year my figs were grown in ground.   Never a shortage of main crop figs but few brebas.

Last year I did a major expansion of my container grown figs.  The figs I winter stored above freezing have kindly responded with many early delicious breba (fiorone) samplings.
This is my log for 1st crop figs 2015.  Simply for me figs that are generous breba producers in Zone 6 and taste great rate high on my list.

Natalina – just a regular fig but very generous with tasty sweet brebas and plenty of figlets that will ripen late.

Bolzano Nero U.  -  source the foothills near the Dolomite mountains of northern Italy.  The mother tree was 25’ or so tall and wide and loaded with bushels of medium large delicious black figs.
The brebas are just as nice.  Lots of seed crunch, very sweet, thin skin, delicate jammy tones.

bolzano nero desert king fiorone IMG_1569.jpg

Desert King -  pictured above.  This is my second desert king tree (in 5 gal) from a different source and for some reason ripens 2 weeks later than my other one that is in a larger (15 gal)  container.  The flesh is also lighter, sweeter and much tastier  than the other one.

Attached includes the a desert king from the other tree that ripened 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for looking and for your comments and ideas!

Thanks for sharing. Interesting that the smaller and I assume younger DK is better. Sounds like a tree that needs to be airlayered and then replace the bigger less tasty tree.

Thanks John, Luke, Francisco!

Calvin, thanks for the suggestion but I am wondering if there are different variants of desert king or whether to write it off to fig terroir.

The second DK photo shows a fig that's less ripe than the first.  If you look at the white part of the fruit you'll see the second photo shows an opaque white, where in the first photo the white part is starting to turn translucent.  If you let both stay on the tree longer (with critter protection) they'll taste even better.

Just sharing as I am learning.  If it helps others that's great.  I just need a checklist to keep track of how my figs taste so I can determine the keepers.

Thanks Paul.
Congrats I hear you are having another super summer for figs this year!  Isn't that hot summers for 3 years in a row?

My container grown brebas are almost finished except for 2 promising looking Dauphine an a few more (strawberry?) verte.

The in ground figs only have a few brebas that are behind this year but with last winter's -25C for most of February it is surprising to have any.
The main crop in ground looks  a little behind due to the cold and wet June.

This is my last post on my 2015 1st crop figs.  It has been a super year for brebas!

These are the last brebas of the season and haven't seen too any posts on these varieties so hope they are of interest or entertaining for you.

Capelas Azores - This tree is 5/6 years old but got setback in the 2013 winter.  It started with 6 brebas and ripened 2.  Unfortunately a big bird found them and took a few bytes so I picked them a couple of days early.  They were nice size figs meaty and sweet but not a lot of flavour.

   capelas breba IMG_1731.jpg

Sucrette - produced 3 delicious brebas, another one that knocked my socks off.  Very sweet and great flavour.

sucrette fiorone IMG_1759.jpg
Black Mission - don't see too much posted on BM and yet both brebas were very sweet and delicious.
  BM fiorone IMG_1781.jpg

Bolzano Nero - This fig from N. Italy foothills of dolomite mountains resembles black mission but is longer, bigger, an much bigger producer, tinted stems and skin.  Very sweet and delicious.

  bolzano nero fiorone IMG_1780.jpg
That is it for my 2015 brebas.
Luckily I look out the window and see many 2nd crop figs ripening.  Bought some organza bags 4x6 (15x20cm) and put the on some promising candidates.  Unfortunately the bags turned out to be too small for Atreano and Melanzana figs.  Need to order some bigger bags..LOL

Ciao for now from Niagara.

Thanks John. Sergio and Rafael!

Most of these figs are young and were rooted 2013/14 winter so they benefited from getting to sleep last winter in my sun room (around 45F) and thus they paid me back with some nice 1st crop figs.
This coming winter most will get pushed out to the barn to sleep with the big boys and make room for the new baby figs that are growing nicely.
My challenge will be to insulate the barn and provide enough heating so the breba buds survive the coming winter.   Although with the super el nino coming our way maybe I don't have to worry for this year..LOL

Rafael, the DK came strongly recommended but even so it was surprising how consistent it performed in ripening all its brebas and honestly each one tasted better than the previous one.  DK will be one of the ones getting a preferred location and extra winter protection.
