Lovely plant. I thought they weren't shipping until October.

What fig is that in the foreground. Doesn't seem to want to grow upright.

Jarrett, the tree to the left of the stairs looking out is a Chicago Hardy that I had planned to grow in the greenhouse all summer.  I had to move it out as we are getting a floor laid in the greenhouse this weekend.  The tree went kinda whacky in the greenhouse and had I not installed French doors, I have no idea how I would have gotten it out without cutting it.

Dennis, I'm glad to hear the three you got look right.  My guess is there were some mix ups, but they are making good on any mistakes.  Do any of yours have fruit on them yet?  The one shipped to me has a couple of small figs, which will ripen this year albeit in the greenhouse perhaps.

Once we can confirm the ripe figs, it will be an incredible deal to get a Black Madeira for $29.99.

Great looking tree there, Nick, congrats!

You need to get yourself a Bowie knife for your next video! ;)

I was finally able to make contact with the person that Brandy named as the source for the cuttings of the group of Black Maderia cuttings starts  I discussed with her about not being correct in Fall of 2013, and which I believe are what many of you received. He did confirm that he did send cuttings to JF&E. I am not going to identify them here in respect of privacy but will share part of that discussion here. They are very knowledge about growing fruits in general, figs as well as many other plants, but probably not as obsessed with figs as most of us, and I really enjoyed speaking with them.

They have never grown Black Maderia, but have heard of the fig. I don’t believe he has any fig from Maderia that he is aware of, so maybe JF&E confused the actual source of the cutting in our conversation or the mixup occurred at some other point. They did not recall exactly what cuttings he did send to JF&E, but he is quite familiar with LSU figs and lives in LA, and when I asked about possible black fig suspects LSU Scotts Black Name did come up, but I have not did that compare myself yet as a possibility.

JF&E does have that potted mother tree from USDA UC Davis, and has put out valid BM trees. The small unhealthy looking tree I picked with the earlier start date in that fall 2013 visit as I stated in prior posts is dead on to my USDA UC Davis tree.  I wish now I would have picked up one of the others just for comparison.  So some of you might have received the true BM. Really a pretty easy call if you have ever observed a true BM, as the other plant is quite different from what I have seen. Just an idea but I believe Dennis thought his looked correct and I believe he stated ordering the last 3 they had available. Maybe those last couple trees left that had been picked over for lack of vigor and generally less healthy looking were true and showing the character more  consistent with most BM.

hi johnnyq627,
The bottom tie on the new tree seems too close to the fruit and may hurt it. I would cut and remove that tie.
For your two smaller trees, I would pot up in compost from the nurseries - at least one - to see if that can wake them up - try the smaller with no fruits.
What is your fertilizing schedule on the two small ones ? - they look like missing something - but could be normal for that particular strain of course .
The trees are yours, and you'll do as you prefer and want, of course !
The big one is a real beauty ! congrats !

Another update on the original tree. My brother in law just sent these photos of the first fruits...

Not Black Madeira, but not sure what it is...

It might be a Col. Littman Black Cross coming from Just Fruits. Not a bad fig at all, but not a BM either.

Ok I have a follow up on the JF&E Black Madeira.  I received an email from Brandy this morning notifying me that the Black Madeira tree I received the second time was determined not to be Black Madeira.  She was extremely apologetic and said she will notify me when their Black Madeira UCD stock is available.  This caught me off guard and I hadn't really taken a close look at my JF&E BM for a while since the fruit isn't near ripening yet, so I headed out to the greenhouse to take a look.

Sure enough, upon closer inspection, the tree appears to be something other than Black Madeira.  The leaves are primarily five lobed now and the figs are not showing the red eye.

Here is the comparison of the JF&E "stagnant stage" fig vs my Black Madeira KK "stagnant stage" fig:

JF&E

Black Madeira KK

I give a huge amount of credit to JF&E for not only notifying me of the error, but also keeping track of this issue and following up.  I will update everyone when/if a replacement tree is provided by JF&E.

Ditto, same here---got a call from them too.  My trees did fruit and it was a black fig. But it was not Black Maderia.  We talked about a replacement but I opted for a full refund.  Not bad in my book....a black fig plus money back!  They said they took a huge loss from their supplier on those trees and I know they're truly sorry for the mistake.  Mistakes do happen.  Many of us have purchased trees from Home Depot, Lowes or another nursery and later learn the tree is not what its suppose to be.  Despite their mix up,  I will always buy fig trees from JF&E.  Problems like this do happen and a first for me with JF&E.  They best ones will admit their mistake and support the buyer.

JF&E did say they do have real Black Maderia UCD cuttings rooting now but it will be a few years before they will be able to sell them because BM is a slow grower.

Frank, I'm not sure if it is Col Littman's Black Cross of not.  I have CLBC.  My tree did not fruit this year.  However, Newnandawg has CLBC and his did fruit.  So, I will contact him for some help.

I agree Dennis, JF&E has handled this extremely well.  Mistakes happen and they have gone above and beyond to rectify the situation.

Good job Nick! I called them today and placed another order with them. They are one of the best fruit tree nurseries out there. We are lucky they are in business and sell a large selection of figs.

I was thinking the same thing, but the couple of five lobe leaves keep throwing me off. We will see what it looks like and tastes like when it ripens. Pretty easy to tell the taste of a Black Madeira.

As far as I can tell, it looks to be a Black Madeira. I won't know for sure until it fruits.

Very nice, Johnny! Thx for posting this!

Nick, It might be Col Littman's Cross. I talked with Brandy on the phone for a long time. She said, they don't know what those tree were but they took a beating on them! But hey mistakes happen at nurseries.

Dennis, I have a Col Littman's Cross and it had a couple of dark figs on it this summer. I purchased it from the nursery and it came at a decent size. Cannot recall anything that made this fig sticks out from my other delicious dark figs. We'll try to compare notes next summer if it survives...
