Preliminary info here.

We hope to make this a bigger event this year. We are investigating the possibility of having a selection of USDA/UC Davis figs for tasting this year.

Hi,
I would love to come out. It would be great to meet great people and talk about something we all have in common. It would be a great break away from my busy life.
You can def count on me being there. I'll bring some Italian Fig tree cuttings from my small collection.

I had a confirming e-mail from Howard, the USDA/UC Davis Orchard Manager, that he will be here for the 2014 Fiesta, and is willing to make a presentation. Yes, I said "yes".

Waiting on finances, to let Jon know if I am going. Jenia: That is a great Idea to upload Video of the informational stuff. I may be able to commit to uploading to Youtube for everyone to enjoy and learn. (if I videotape, I better not miss any taste testing of the figs...LOL)   We didn't have enough Black Madieras for everyone to taste.  I did enjoy the Col De Dame Blanc and Jarupa.

Final information is now on the website now.

We have people coming from near and far, including Howard Garrison from USDA UC Davis. If you ever had questions about the USDA program, this is an opportunity to have them answered. Maybe I can convince him to make some of his barbequed figs.

I'm planning to go, and will bring more home-cured olives.
It will be good to see Howard again. My company has drastically cut back travel to the greater Sacramento area, so I haven't been able to stop by Wolfskill for quite a while.

I signed up. I had to hold out because I had learned that we would be throwing a party for my parents that same day [it's 60th anniversary of their first date; they got married by the end of that year].
They have insisted that their party can be in the late afternoon, so I'm all set to attend both. And, I'll bring olives again.

Several attendees had last minute medical, job and family matters interfere with attendance, but we still had 26 people. Some came last year, and some were brand new to figs this year, so it was a nice mix. Informative talks from Maxwell Norton, UCCE Ag advisor in the fig growing areas of CA and Howard Garrison from USDA/UC Davis. For tasting, we had Zidi, 326-1, Native de Agentile, 291, Yellow Neeches, 309-B-1, Verdal Longue, 333-1, Col de Dame, 160-50, Adriatic, 135-4s, White Ischia, and some others from WEO, plus Black Mission NL, Vista. Other people brought Panache, Reverse, Kadota, Long Yellow, Col de Dame, Strawberry Verte, Samoa Sunshine, and more.

What was the overall feedback on Zidi at the festival?

Igor already reported that it was one of his favorites.  How about others?

Harvey,

Zidi was everyone's favorite at the Fiesta followed I think by Yellow Neeches. This was an informal feedback. I happened to be sitting near the figs and listened to the comments.

The one fig that absolutely floored me was the Capri Q that Jon brought back from USDA orchard in Davis. I had no idea it was an edible caprifig. Its pulp was a beautiful deep red and had a great taste! As I said I was floored.

Downside of Yellow Neeches is that is is so small, but it really packs a flavor punch.

Zidi  is Good, I had 3 figs this year, and I was impressed.....I live in the foothills and I don't believe the fig wasp was involved.

That I do not know, sorry. Jon might though.

Armando,
I believe that without the magic wasp would be no Zidi for you.

Zidi is a Smyrna type and it's very unlikely those fruits would persist without caprification.

There have been various reports about Zidi, including some who get figs occasionally without the wasp. Last year I had a 2-3 (?) mature on mine (2 yr tree), but this year, none on the larger plant - they formed, but all fell off. And only 1 got ripe on the smaller tree. Not worth the trouble.
