When I was in Peru there was supposed to be a 600 yr old fig planted buy Pazaro in the court yard of the original Presidential Palace .
I thought it would be cooll to pinch a cutting .
But The day we wer to go tour the palace there was a political demonstration and the square was closed .

ROSS PAW PAWS should do fine planted out doors in your area . I should plant some in my orchard DOH   I did plant hardy Almonds this yr .. last yr it got down to -19f on night.

I live in zone 5b .  Paw Paws grow wild here along the rivers and in the forests .
Many people in my town have grafted cultivators planted in there yard for there attractive foliage and fruit.

Yes we have hardwood and pine forests  in Nebraska and the only place its flat is in a river Valleys.

I am Puzzled when people describe Nebraska  as Flat and treeless ??? .

But I Image if you drive I-80 in the Platte Valley and stare at the pavement strait ahead  and don't turn your head to the left or the right... you would miss the forests of cotton woods and oaks along the Platte River and the 600' to 900'  tall bluffs along the river valleys edge A lot of the  .....300 or 400 miles across the state.  ha

paw paws are pollinated buy flies not bees . you can hand pollinate or the old timers around here hang a little bit of rotting meat in the tree
but I would be worried about critters . ha

The beautiful Blue Swallow Tail Butterfly  lays its eggs on the paw paw tree .

I am under orders to not get more fig trees .....I only have 6 small trees .   .....ok I ordered 5 more for spring delivery ... yikes

I plan on going up to 10gl Sip type planters from Wal-Mart .  and just keep them pruned small and root prune .  every cpl years .

I can't lug anything bigger down to the basement .

IF I had a big barn I would do half barrels like Dennis .

Richie if its a big oval fruit with red flesh it is probably a Japanese type ..  also  generally a European plum sets blooms in pairs of two ,while Japanese types set in sets of three blooms .

or so I read

One cultivator  suggested to me was ....Red Silk ....?
a semi dwarf  ,said to be a more hardy and earlier ripening  sport  of Wonderful ?

and 4 more types from greenFins $7 tree offer because I kill cuttings .

I ordered  Florea , RDB , DK, and a ukn from NY  called CIGAR  because the Italian gentleman who owned it smuggled a cutting in a cigar pack when he immigrated .

I AM WONDERING  if an air layer would grow while there kind of dormant in cool basement for winter ?

Quote:
ok I am going to try this notching on my fig trees ....see if it works . I already pinch terminal buds at 5 05 6 leaves .

lets see the theory.. if I notch above node it will induce a new branch ...figs grow mostly on new WOOD .

IF I notch/nick below the node this will induce the formation of a breba fig on OLD WOOD

Who has done this and how did it work for you .

when would best time to try this  now  ....or in the spring or .. below for breba now and later above a node for branching . or visa versa ...   hummm.....?

I am in zone 5b
I  was interested in those with actual experience could you suggest  3 or 4  cultivators suitable for pot culture that produce a good berba crop ? per haps  dwarfs ?

I have ordered a small desert king .
, so far I had one breba last year on my HC .

THANKS

I am in S.E.Nebraska zone 5b

I was wondering if there are any  pomegranate cultivators, per haps dwarfs that would be good for pot culture?

Grown like figs in the north ,out doors for the summer produce figs, then into cold dark cellar for winter ? or  as house plant for winter ? .

I  am interested in growing  some fruit , just curious if I could in zone 5b.

Do any of you have experience growing in pots in a colder climate ?

thanks
