The propaganda people no longer call It " Global Warming " since the embarrassing actual science shows the planet has actually been very slowly cooling over all globally for the last 100 years . ; )

The propaganda people now call it " CLIMATE CHANGE "  ;)

Its been cooler and wetter here for three years now .. rain rain rain ...

cool wet weather starting to effect my fruit trees ect.

So all jokes aside ..  ..... do you think they will still send limited cuttings out to individuals if you write a reasonable detailed request . showing you are doing some good research on how different cultivators do in your own areas and if your sharing this information ?

hi Dennis those look great ....!

are you saying   that  most of theses yellow figs are about the same or the same cultivator ?

I have a small Excel . I am trying to choose the best 5 or six cultivators to grow just in pots here in zone 5 ..

dennis perhaps you will read my post on this and comment .thanks`

.
Quote:
Peter's Honey and Kadota are not the same. And yes, have them both including Exce!, White Texas Everbearing, Votata, and other yellow figs. Peter's Honey takes a few years to develop but they are worth the wait!

That's   Interesting Dave .

I will not be planting any out side for a long time maybe never .  I  will be limiting it to 6 or so potted trees that I will over winter in a cool dark basement room .

I am fairly certain no fig will survive in zone 5 out side without extreme protection so until so unknown

super hardy fig is discovered . I will have  to stick to pots.

but please let me know if I am wrong ,

thanks

WOW ! Thanks for all of the great suggestions ......

So out of the trees I have which ones should I retire and maybe trade for more suitable trees ?? what do you guys think ????

The Fig trees I have : Hardy Chicago , Weeping Black , Ginoso , Excel , VEBT ,  Genovese Nero...................

IT looks like HC is a keeper for sure?

The Excel ,VEBT , Genovese Nero are still small.

The Ginoso has ripened some fruit, the weeping black ripened some fruit two yrs ago ,but last year the fruit did not ripen .

hi I am in zone 5 S.E. Nebraska I wish I could have a hundred different trees but I just don't have the space or time right now .

I do have six potted figs but I am not sure  if all of them are the best choices ? The six potted figs I have are  Hardy Chicago , Weeping Black , Ginoso , Excel , VEBT ,  Genovese Nero .

Some of you I would call Super fig experts .  some experts for sure ,some fig savonts ha so what would your top 5 picks be for cold hardy early ripening figs for pots . dark and light cultivators ?

I am guessing smaller dwarf types or bush types THAQT RIPENN EARLY might be best
but I assume most fig cultivators can be kept trimmed down ?

I am going to restrict my figs to 3' to 4' in 15gl water from below pots .. I guess I will be root pruning every 3 to 5 years?

"I store my trees in a cool dark basement for winter and do the fig shuffle in the spring ."

So please give me your opinions on what I have and your top 5 picks for growing this way ?

I want to eventually find a green or yellow fig f
that is fairly cold hardy .. more of a dwarf or bush that has an early ripening main crop for pot culture.

When I started growing figs I had hopped to find a fig cultivator or two I could grow in ground in zone 5 with minimal protection..

I now am fairly certain that is not probably possible . ....tell some new mystery supper hardy fig is found ?

I grow a few figs in pots .. 6 so far see list below .

I am going with 15gal water from below pots as the biggest I will use and prune the trees short . or in bush form .

I guess I should concentrate  on the more dwarf type trees or bush's that ripen early .

please comment on the ones I already have  if you think there suitable or any duds .

so far there all dark except Excel it is yellow no fruit so far . not sure if it meets my requirements ??

so I think I need a green type that matches my criteria

thanks for comments egghead ..I got the idea for using the kitty litter in potting mix from using them to keep a steady RH in my humidors ..

they seem to give off or absorb moisture at a constant rate ?  or it seems so .

Ok my casual unscientific observation so far .

I have 2 figs in 10" self watering/water from below dollar store pots . They are  in a mix half half   Miracle-Gro organic garden soil and  miracle-gro potting soil.
I added some course perlite . They are a Excel and a VEBT.

I have one  Genovese Nero in10" self watering/water from below dollar store pot tin the same mix As above with about a half cup to a cup of the kitty litter silica beads in the mix .

I have to water this plant about half as often .. as the other two

ok maybe I should actually write it down .. now I am just recalling ....guessing . ha

I have several house plants potted up with the same mix with the kitty litter .

No  the kitty litter beads remain hard and do not expand .. they absorb and release  moisture but do not get soft or expand

The MIMI litter is $4 for a 4lb bag at Wal-Mart . there are other brands .. .....

I also use the same kitty litter as a humidification media in my three humidors . I put it in bags made from cut up nylon hose . it keeps the humidity level in my humidor at a rock steady 65% RH.

I have about 400 stinky good cigars in my humidors.

if I need to raise the humidity a few points I sprits one of the bags a few times with distilled water .

if the relative humidity in the room is higher than I want .. I can dry one of the bags in microwave and lower the RH in the humidor to 65% if lets say the RH in my basement is 80%

It is very dry here in winter and very humid in summer .

Anyway now I am experimenting using the kitty litter to regulate moisture levels in my potting soil .

Hummmm......

suspect recent damage to my figs leafs  might be  from mites ?

so I goggled up some remedies ....there are many ...so !

I mixed up a quart of warm water ,a tablespoon  of olive oil , a teaspoon of lime juice and a few drops of dawn dish soap .

I SPRAYED  THIS concoction on both sides of the leaves .

we shall see if it solved the problem hummm..
