Subject: eBay... Arggghhh! Replies: 11

What I don't understand about ebay is why anyone bothers to bid on anything before the last couple seconds? It's great for the buyer, but I don't understand it from the bidders point of view. I don't mind paying a high price for a tree that I want (if my wife knew what I have spent on fig trees in the last month I think she would actually kill me), but I never bid before there is about 3 seconds left.

Thanks diesler. I was going to go for it but it looks like he ended the auction early.

That's actually what I was thinking. I am figuring the other one might get a little out of my range so if I can get this one for ten bucks I don't have much to lose if it does not make it.

Saw this on ebay and I have been wanting this variety but I am not sure if this one has a shot. Can the growth get healthier as the tree puts on size? Any opinions are appreciated.

Believe it or not Dieseler, I would trade your weather for mine any day. I love the cold and hope to be back up in PA some day.

Deiseler, we don't have it too perfect. Last year we had a few nights hit 20 and as papayamon said there is almost no warning. I am about 30 miles south of Papayamon, so I am hoping the extra degree or two will keep my plants from freezing to the ground. I am keeping all of my newly aquired stuff in the pots and with my tropicals in the greenhouse till spring and then they are on there own in ground.

I am in 9a and just picked one of these up. I think my problem will be the splitting more than anything else. We get pretty much daily rains from june-august. The rain starts to slow down around now. I am hoping they will not start ripening until september-october when it is a bit dryer and still plenty hot.

I don't know about JR's LSU gold but I don't have any reason to doubt his are the real thing. Especially considering his location. I picked up a great one from Durio nursery recently that definitely looks to be true judging by the fruit.

I am curious about how your trees from Willis turn out. I have read mixed reviews on them.

I have been considering picking up an improved celeste but I have been reading that it may be the same as O'Rourke. Anyone able to clarify this for me?

I gave it a try on that auction, but gave up at $100. It's a great looking little tree.

Dieseler, How is your Jolly Tiger doing? I was thinking about taking the plunge for one and am curious about how vigorous it is.

I actually bought one from him a couple days ago. I wish I would have known these were about to go up for auction. I might have to pick up a couple more.

Wow, $103. Congrats to the seller. I would be airlayering every branch if I had one of those trees. I don't understand paying that much for that fig, but I definitely know what it's like to get the "gotta have it" bug. Good luck to whoever won it. I hope it does great for you.

Anyone know if the "sal's" from UCD is the true sal's? I just put in a UCD order today and decided to add that one when I saw it on the list.

Well, the poor taste in rainy conditions probably bumps that of the list then. I am in central FL. Pretty much rains every day here.

I am looking for a really large fig mainly just to grow for the size, but I would like it to be at least decent tasting as well. I have not been able to find much info on "quarter pounder". Does anyone here have pics of a ripe fruit and could you describe the taste? Worth growing? Are there any figs out there that are even larger? I saw a pic on treesofjoy called Dauphin Vienna. Anyone have any experience with that one? From the pic it looks to be just massive. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the info. That would probably make it much more feasible when only ordering one variety.

I wonder why UC davis uses only next day delivery? Seems like second day would be fine. Not sure if I am ready to spend $70 on cuttings since the Col de dame is the last tree I have space for. Just have to keep looking.

I am in central FL Z9, so no lack of heat for me. I'll check what is involved with ordering from UC Davis. Thanks.

I have read a lot about this fig and decided I have to give it a try but it seems very tough to find. Anyone know of an online source for these plants?

I have not bought any figs from that seller, but I have bought other plants from him and they were pretty decent plants. For the price I thought it was a great deal. I am actually planning on picking up a black mission from him this week.
