Funny story my father told me while I was in Italy. He said when he was younger he would load up the donkey about 4 am, so he could get to Castel di sangro around 7am . He figured if he got there before anybody else he could sell out all his figs and come home early. As soon as he got sold out, he started heading home. As he got in the mountains it started dumping rain ,thunder and lightning he said he could not see 10 feet in front of that donkey. He put some plastic on his head sat on the saddle and let that donkey take him home the donkey walked almost 3 hours without any guidance. He had been to Castel di sangro so many times he already knew his way home.

242.JPG 243.JPG 259.JPG 284.JPG First two pictures are of an old fig that has been in my town since before i was born, people call it la ficura traone .There are fig trees bigger than this one, so when i said I used to climb these trees when I was a boy, now you know how massive these fig trees were. Next picture is of figs growing in roman ruins in Sepino, Sepinum is were my ancestors the Sannites used to have their encampment, until the roman empire took over after 3 wars. Last picture is of Acciano fig also from my hometown and a very good fig. I will post more pics when I have more time.

Steve if you wait for it to get real soft,  honey will start dripping  from the bottom of the fig. Then eat it.Then tell me if you would feed the rest of your figs to pigs.

352.JPG 354.JPG  This fig is from the mother tree of all salce figs in USA Just picked it tonight. First one of the year, very sweet, caramel fruity flavor,to die for. And yes! i still would give all others to pigs if i had plenty of salce. I have been eating salce figs since june in my greenhouse, but the outside ones are just starting to ripen. I just got back from Italy ate a ton of figs and took a bunch of pictures. I have added a new rare fig to my collection and it is called zoccolante very rare,I will post pictures in another thread.

71GTO it probably is a dottato. Capruccia is a part of Isernia which is the next town over from were i come from,
which is Fornelli. The dialects are all different, but no matter how you say it, it is still dottato. Dottato is a very good fig,
sweet, white fig and it gets quite large, and an excellent producer.

Sal, it probably is the same fig cause I lived about an hour from Cassino. Somebody give me a kadota fig 2 yrs ago, this year I ate figs from kadota and dottato they looked alike but dottato was a lot bigger and tasted 100% better.

Harvey, it gets very hot in summertime but the greenhouse is on a hill and it gets a nice breeze most of the time, also figs love heat the more the better. The green hose is from a 1500 gal. water tank that is on the side of greenhouse and it catches rain from gutters on the garage . I mostly only use rainwater the hose is 1-1/2 " when i open it it only takes about 5 minutes to flood the greenhouse, very quick way of watering.this year I had to cut all the tops off all those figs they were over 10' tall. Dale, I would rater jail them then loose them to the winter I would never forgive myself after all the trouble my father went through to get them here. Dale, I put a package in the mail this morning for you. Patty, Emilia Romagna is a beautiful region of Italy I have been there, but then again is there any bad region of Italy? Patty, my grandmother was 88 when she died and died in her sleep, she drank wine till the day before she died, she always said water was only good to wash with.

Steve, I don't believe anybody had this fig until my father brought it over from Italy. Now there is a lot of them out there, but they all come from me. I didn't name them Mario this or Mario that, I just give them their dialect name from Italy. This is a rare fig even in my hometown there is very few left because nobody works the land anymore.

Steve, that is a Salce fig. The one in next picture is also a Salce but with round leafs. It looks like a total different fig but by the time they get to be 3 yrs old the leafs change and look like picture number 3. Weird I cant explain it.

I spent $620 for light panels for roof and one side, rest of material I had from work. I estimate it would cost around a $1000 to built .
I just screw panels on front and side in winter and take them off in spring. One hour worth of work each time. I also plant greens on bottom of
figs, for eating and the fall plantings last well in to the winter. If I ever find the time I plan on attaching another section on west end of the garage
and have more fruit trees.

Grasa, I call it dottato because it's the Italian name for it, we also call it ottare in dialect. It might be the same as kadota or pingo de mell but all i know my Dottato tastes 100 times better than Kadota and I have eaten both this year. Also they look the same but my dottato was much sweeter and much larger. Also why do people go on here and take a fig that has been around for thousands of years and give it their own name? if you dont know it's name call it Italian unknown or greek unknown or whatever.

There is no salce there i can't identify them unless you get a fig and a leaf and put them next to each other. You should have gotten at least 3 or 4 .different kind of figs which anybody would love to have in their collection.

womack the fig tastes the same in ky. as it did in italy. Slingha the reason uncle Luigi's figs looks big it is because it's not a salce. Unlcle Luigi has a lot of
the same figs i got, they all came from my hometown in Italy at one time or
another and we don't grow any other varieties. Nobody had salce figs until my father brought it over and last year i gave my uncle Luigi one plant . This year i brought my uncle peter one plant. My uncle Luigi grows figs because his wife likes them, but he doesn't know much about figs. Last year i give Bill all my cuttings which he sold on e bay and i will give him all my cuttings this year. I don't sell fig trees i send cuttings to people and i even pay the shipping and don't want nothing in return but sometimes people try my patience. I have send cuttings to people spend $10 on shipping send 2 or 3 variety and i don't even get a call to acknowledge that they have received it. I know that not everybody on here is like that there is a lot of nice people and i wish i could send everybody some cuttings . Vito you will love this fig.

Came home from vacation today and found a bunch of ripe salce figs on
my trees . The birds beat me to a lot of them but there still was plenty for everybody to eat and then some. I put these pictures on here because a lot of people have this fig now and nobody has seen pictures before. This fig is not very big as i have always said, but to me it is a giant on taste.

George, congratulations it is quite an accomplishment to be able to send 2 kids to Brown University . My uncle informed me today that he didn't want to sell any of his figs, so to the people that send me a pm i am sorry. But do not fear my other uncle Louie which lives 1/2 mile down the road from my uncle Peter has plenty of figs he has some as big as 6 feet some 4 feet some 3 feet all in big half 55 gal pots his prices are $55 for 6' $35 for 4' $25 for 3'

If you double click on the third pic. you will see some figs up close, my uncle pics a few 5 gal. bucket of figs of this tree. The small trees in pots are air layers of the main tree my uncle makes about 20 to 30 off this tree every year and when he cuts the air layers they are already 2 to 3' tall. As far as selling them he only sells them if you go to his house he will not ship, if you go to his house be prepared to drink some wine or you are going to hurt his feelings. If anybody is willing to go to R.I pm me and i will send his address. Also two of those 3' pots are going home with me to ky. The tree is at least 15 yrs old and he believes in miracle grow a couple of times a year. As far as the house he has posts in ground every 4' then takes a sheet of ply with insulation glued to it and bolts it to post. The branches he pulls them down and in and ties them with a rope the ones he can't pull down he cuts off.

Hi everyone i am on vacation in R.I and visiting my uncle Peter's farm and I figured some people would like to see some pictures of his figs. This is one huge fig and pictures don't do it justice. My uncle is 81 and every winter he puts walls and a roof around this fig so it wont freeze and in the spring he takes them down. I brought him one of my salce figs and in return he gave me
an Acciano fig witch i didn't have in my collection. The Acciano is in the last pic. these are black figs and are super sweet and are huge.

Womack i come from the Molise region it used to be Abruzzi Molise until the region was split up. These figs ought to do well in ground in Georgia. Molise is a mountainous region and we used to get light snow and light frost every year and they never died. If you ever come to Kentucky come and see me and i will give you all the cuttings you want.

Bill , i have already eaten a few figs this week .This year for the first time i should have two crops , i believe this year we should get together a little sooner than we did last year . I should have a bunch of salce figs this year as my outside trees never died back and the ones in the greenhouse are touching the ceiling, and putting out a bunch of figs.Sara i still got your fig tree it is growing like crazy and needs to go in a bigger pot.

Bill i didn't spell the name correctly it should be troiano calabrese ,you should be able to see a picture of it on http://www.ficuscarica. Noss this fig has what i would call a honey peachy taste real sweet and when it's ripe it oozes honey drops on the bottom. I am not good at giving descriptions but like i said this is my favorite. I wish every fig grower had one but i am not into shipping as i don't have the time . Most of the time i work out of town and only come home on weekends. Frank those were hard times when i was a boy in the old country, but they were also the happiest times of my life. I remember picking figs by the bucket and trowing them over the fence for the pigs to eat, but when the salce was ripe and the honey started coming out the bottom and they started to crack i would climb the tree and sit on a big branch and eat until i was ready to bust. Sorry about all the rambling but i wish everyone on this site could climb on a big fig tree and eat all they could.

Salice in Italian means willow but salce is a dialect of my hometown. It doesn't mean nothing its just a name the old people give this fig. All figs that come from my hometown are only known in dialect, because when i was a boy that is all that we spoke. When i got to 1st grade in school that is when i started to learn how to speak the real Italian. I have different variety of figs but i only know them by dialect names. Last year i identified 2 one was a triana calabrese and the other was paradiso nero. I have probably eaten more figs than any man alive, but nothing tastes as good as salce, that is why i wanted to spread this fig all over the USA. A lot of people get on here and name figs whatever they want but i would like to keep the figs to their true origins and name them what they should be named not Mario this and Mario that.

This is my greenhouse attached to my garage. It is a 14x40, roof and west side has clear lexan . The front and east side i only close in winter when figs go dormant and i reopen in spring after last frost. Those were 3 year old trees last year, this year they are hitting the roof which is 10' tall. Off one triana calabrese last year i picked at least 300 figs and this year it will flower twice as some of them will be ready to eat shortly. And yes they do taste just like outside figs.

This is not just a white fig. It is the most tastiest fig you will ever eat. All other figs don't hold a candle to this one. This fig was considered a delicacy when i was a boy and my dad would pick it so we could eat it fresh. All other figs were picked and fed to the pigs. Salce is the only name i know for it, and it is in dialect. This fig is becoming rare even in my hometown. I would like to see as many people as possible grow this fig. This year i have given Bill all my cuttings in the hope that they will get to as many people as possible.

Triano Calabrese means it comes from the Calabria region which borders Molise . So it may not be native to Molise region but it is close by. All i know is, it looks like it ,and it tastes real good. I would like to give it the Italian name it deserves not Mario this and Mario that. It comes from Italy, and it deserves an italian name. This year i picked about 400 figs of this 3 yr old plant.

Thanks for all the compliments David . I had a great day, and loved to entertain some good people. I hope next year we can make it bigger and better. Sara i still got your salce fig here in a pot and i will hold it till next year or whenever you come over. I also have a dottato wright from the old country in a pot for you. Let me explain, the salce tree comes from my hometown in Italy. I do not know the real name of this fig because it is rare even in Italy. When i was a boy we used to raise figs mostly to feed them to our pigs . We would raise the salce for our table, because once you've had salce fig the rest just don't matter. To me it is the best fig you will ever eat.
