Subject: too much osmocote? Replies: 1
Posted By: petea Views: 1,233

Is it possible to overdose with a slow release fertilizer?  I used a 14-14-14 osmocote but i didnt really measure when i put it on.There was about a tablespoon measuring piece in there that i used about one tablespoon every 1 and 1/2 gallon of pot size. so for the 7 gallon pot i have i used 5 talespoons.  I guess it was my own fault if i over did it.  I have been so busy this spring that my gardening seems to be the last thing i get around to doing!  Oh I lied! checking the forum is the last thing i am getting around to doing this spring.  Forgive me guys!

I had three ripe figs out of this tree in its first year in a one gallon pot. It was a huge grower for me. They had great flavor.  The last one i picked was Oct 30th and it was as sweet as it was in August.  Definitely a good variety to have.

I have one that was a started by Bass as a cutting and it is the biggest grower for me.  Almost as big as my 2 yr old trees.  It put on 3 nice size figs that i am hoping will ripen.

I have several rooted cuttings that are leafing out but they are a very pale yellowis green not really green.  They are in the storage bins in my room not near any light.  Should i move them to somehere with more light?  Also, how long do you keep them in clear cups?  Some of them the roots are almost out of the cups.

Martin, all 3 gets darker as you get to the bottom.  These are also the biggest ones.  The cutting itself looks fine, not mushy at all.

Luckily this was with my fist test cutting.  All was going great.  I had it in the clear cup and then all of a sudden the leaves started to droop and eventually dropped.  Overwatering I suspect.  Is there any hope of salvaging this cutting?  The leaves are off and i replanted into a new cup with fresh perlite and vermiculite and put it in the bins Jon uses.  I hope it makes it.  Any thoughts?

I transferred my first trial run rooted cutting to a clear cup about a month ago.  It is in 100% Vermiculite.  The first 2 weeks i had it covered with a plastic bottle for humidity.  I started to see roots growing well and extending to the sides of the cup.  Once the leaves got too big i could not keep it covered  with the bottle.  Since then there is about 4 inces of growth in the cutting and 4 leaves, 2 of which are pretty large but i have not seen much more root growth.  The plant does look health.  Is this ok?  Could the loss of humidity cause the roots to hault?  I tried to put it in the bins Jon uses but it is too large.  Any ideas or suggestions?

I had a couple of cuttings in my fridge from my fathers tree.  I started 1 cutting about 6 weeks ago just to see what happens and practice.  It rooted well and i just put it into  wetted vermiculite with a 16oz water bottle over the top for humidity.  How often do i need to water this thing?

I agree with Rafed. You continue to outdo yourself.  I am hoping to go back to Syria this summer and gather as much info and cuttings of the native fig trees as i can.
