Thanks guys for your replies. Yes they are outside where they can get plenty of sunlight.
When do I fertilize my trees and when to put out the Epson salt?

I would like to add a couple more trees to the one that I have. Could someone recommend 2 different variaty, and where is the best place to buy them, I would like to get then as high as they come and when would be the best time to plant them here in SC?

Thanks,
Wade

Hi, I need some advice from the fig experts. I have tried for several years to grow a few fig trees of different varities but no luck. Every year my trees will grow although slowly but when they put on figs they always remain  small and will never ripen before frost which is usually October here in the midlands of SC. I was told that you shouldn't fertilize figs and they get plenty water because of my sprinkler system. The last tree that I planted a friend gave it to me in a small bucket and I set it out in my yard, it has grown to be about 4 feet tall now but does the same thing, no figs before frost.

I am at the end of my road trying to grow figs. Will someone tell me what am  doing wrong? Do I need to fertlize them if so when, how much and which fertlizer to use. Do I need to prune them if so when and how much, does anyone have any pictures to show how to correctly prune them.

Lastly I would like to buy a couple of fig trees, I don't know which one I have but the friend that I got ine from has a tree about 12 foot tall that has plenty of figs on it and he does nothing to it. If someone sells fig trees on this site I want to buy two and tell me when I need to set them out. You can pick the variety based on where I live in the sunny midlands of SC. Guys any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,\
Wade

Thanks guys for all of your replies.
Sorry I didn't put a time line in my post. My cuttings (unknown variety given to me by a friend in California) have been in the clear containers about 4 to 5 weeks. I will take the advice of one poster and look at the roots this week to see what is going on. I have began to water them, but if I understood the rooting system you are not suppose to water them in the clear containers because the water in the bottom of the plastic tote gives enough of humidity for them. At this point I thought that with the holes drilled in the bottom that any excess water will drain out.
I gave my brother in law some of the same cuttings and after they had roots in the zip lock bags we transplanted his into the clear containers and he started to water them, and his has roots growing inside the clear containers like crazy, although I told him my understanding was that not to water them, maybe I misunderstood the instructions.
I do appreciate more than you guys know all of the replies to my post from each one of you. I will be patient and give them all the time I need, at this point I have nothing to lose.

Thanks again to all of you and if you need more questions answered please reply and I will be happy to respond.

I got some cuttings and started them according to the information I learned on this forum. I followed everything to the letter and my cuttings grew roots in the zip lock bags. I asked on this forum when I should transfer them to the clear containers that have the special moss and perlite in them, I was told when the roots were at least 1/4 inch long. When they reached this length or maybe a little longer I transplanted them from the zip lock bag to the clear containers inside the clear tote container.
Since then nothing has happened, they had leaves when they were in the zip lock bags, now they don't have leaves and I can't see any roots inside the clear container.

What did I do wrong, I thought I had followed the instructions to the letter, but I must have missed something.
Do you think I have lost them or is there something can do?

Thanks,
Wade

Thanks ottawanz5 for your reply. There were roots on them when I removed them from the bags, they were from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch. I have not watered them since I transplanted them in the bottles inside the clear plastic tote. The only water they get is from the humitidy in the plastic tote from the water in the bottom, I have read on here that it is very easy to over water and I didn't want to do that.
I don't understand the term dome, please explain.
Do I need to cover the tops of my bottles with a zip lock bag to keep the moisture in?
I hope I haven't killed them cause they were looking so good.
What should I do, put them back into the zip lock bags and try to grow more roots or what would you advise that I do?
Also when you put the cutting in the bottle with the perlite and moss do you pack it down pretty tight, I packed it very little when I put them in.

Thanks,
Wade

About 2 weeks ago I took my cuttings out of the zip lock bags and put them into clear (2 liter Pepsi bottles) containers. I mixed the special moss and the perlite then transplanted my cuttings in them. I left about a inch of moss and perlite on the bottom then planted my cuttings.
At that time they had started to produce green buds, now I don't see the buds, if so they are smaller.
I put then in the clear container with a frame 1 inch thick to keep them from touching the water in the bottom of my container. For fear they were not getting enough light inside my house now everyday I set them outside so they can get sun, we are having 60 degree days now and by the weekend it is suppose to be in the 80s.
After 2 weeks I see no sign of the roots wrapping around inside my bottles, what am I doing wrong, do you think I have lost them and I was so excited starting them with all of the information I have learned on this site.
If anyone has any advice on what I should do I would gladly like to hear from you. Just tell me what to do and I will do it.

Thanks,
Wade

To all of the fig experts. I have removed my cuttings from the ziplock bag and put them in my 2 liter Pepsi bottles, using the perlite and the special moss. How long before I will see roots wrapping around the inside of my plastic Pepsi bottles?

Also I live in Zone 8 and would like to set them out outside. It is starting to warm up a little here. So when I see a good amount of roots in the plastic Pepsi bottles could I transplant them outside then, if so what should I add in the hole along with my natural soil?

Thanks for all of the help you provided to me, I am so excited to have accomplished this.

I have started my fig cuttings from the instructions that I got from this forum and some others (I am so excited). My cuttings in the bag have started roots, how long should they be before I plant them in the clear containers?

Also some are not progressing as fast as others, so do I take the ones farther along and put them into the clear containers and continuing doing this as they get longer roots or do I wait and put them in the clear containers all at the same time.

Thanks for all of the instructions and photos that help neewbes like myself.

I would like to get some fig cutting when it is time to start with wraping them in newspaper to start the roots. I know there are some people on here that either sell or donate a few. I would like about 4 each of 4 varities, dark skin that will grow well in SC.
I don't think now is the time to start these but when the time comes will they be advertized on this forum and also do you have to get on a waiting list, if so I want to enter my name now so who would I contact?
I like to eat them from the tree and also would like to start a few to give to my friends.

Thanks,
Wade

Can You use 2 liter plastic bottles

I was reading about starting figs from cutting. The large plastic cups mentioned here is not sold in my area, I can't find them anywhere. Could you take a 2 liter drink bottle and cut the top off and use them so you can observe the roots growing? If so about how high from the bottom should you cut it off, so it will be the right height?

Also I would like to start some cuttings, does anyone have any extra they would like to get rid of so I can be another fig grower or is it too early?

Thanks,
Wade

Does anyone have any fig trees for sale? I am looking for about 9 trees but 3 different varities. I am looking for trees that will do well in zone 8, SC. Would it be better to buy potted plants or bare roots and set them out in pots?
Is the early spring the beat time to set trees outside?
Please send information for trees shipped to Elgin, SC 29045.

Thanks,
Wade
