Subject: does anyone keep fig journal? Replies: 23

i don't keep journal.. paper trails are not good.. well.. i think they are not good, but i know i'm wrong.

so, what's the best way to go about keeping fig journal? online? in a notebook? i guess online is more "public".

i need to start keeping one. i'm not sure what i have and no idea what i had. it's getting rather confusing.

martin,

8 yrs is long time to wait.. there were couple of figs last yr, but they didn't ripen. i'm hoping to at least taste some this yr.

i don't pinch for branching until the main trunk is at the height i want.. at least 2'. or at least that's what i do with fast growing ones like CdD.

breba crop doesn't stay on too well for me. most of them drops. not sure why. maybe not enough water while stored in the garage... this yr, i think i might get to taste few, but doesn't look too good. few dropped since my last post. Paradiso (Bronze or Nero) seems to be the only one that's holding on to the breba tight.

i'm going back to what i started with. osmocote on top, and MG every week till the end of july. that gave me most vegetative growth. more branches, more figs. dolomite lime every few months till end of the season. i tried few different fertilizers, but that gave me most growth and most figs. i might try organic fertilizer gain next yr.. maybe i didn't give it enough chance and last yr, it did rain a lot.

rabbits are good... but don't over cook them. they come out like microwaved chicken if you over cook them.

dennis, after you mentioned it, Calvert is much smaller tree. the skin is much darker last yr also. we need weather like 2012... only the first fig had that super tart flavor. i'm thinking that was one off.

the latex should stop in few days at most. best to cut them when they are dormant. once they awake, the latex can drip for awhile.

been growing them side by side. the figs were little different last yr, but the leaves and growth characteristics are very similar.

will post pix of figs and the leaves later this yr. they both seems to push long stem leaves.

it's growing better than i thought. not very tall, but the leaves aren't all that bad at all. there is a branch that has different shaped leaves below. but it seems, from last yr and this spring, these ones seems to be dominant leaf shape.

rooted 5 BM so far. 4 of them rooted and grew fine. one of them just died without much action. but some cuttings do that. another one did the same was one of USDA/UCD Ischia Black. i had two cuttings. one is growing nicely, other just died. i pulled them out once they were dead. didn't find any specific issues. no rotted cutting. the roots just all died and went away.

UPM is peat based potting mix. add peat moss on top of that and it will hold more water. to lessen the issue with root, i keep same soil mix as in the cup. once the roots are hardened, i bare root and manhandled the roots going into 3 gal or larger. at that point, i water with hose until water runs out few times.

LdA, Paradiso (Bronze or Nero... they are all mislabeled) , VdB, Persian White... and few others showed breba and holding on to them. few other had breba, but dropped them.

what we need plumeria/fig joint task force.. so we can inter-trade those two.. have 7 yr old plumeria that's still doing ok. i think i left it out too long last winter. i wouldn't mind large number of plumeria around here. they smell so good.

don't water it any more. let is drain out and let it dry up a little. stop misting. if it was fine 5 day ago, it should bounce back. as soon as night temp is above 50, set it outside and only water when the whole set up is paper light.

i think i'll try this again this yr. last time i tried it, the cutting didn't do anything. might be the clay soil we have here. it's like a water bag.

any balanced fert will do the job. i think the basic ratio is 3-1-2. but i have used most MG products and they all seems to provide similar results. i also used 1-1-1 ratio before. important thing is to use it in moderation.

i chopped up another tree last night. no soft area under the bark, but the tree has been acting funny. never really grew. then i noticed bark damage. so cut that part off and started slicing away... nothing. it's frustrating to chop the tree off and not finding anything.. but i guess that's a good thing...

imagine how long the darn thing took to get to FL from chile. i'm shocked it hasn't rotted. most figs i take off my tree can be store in fridge up to 3rd day from picking. they don't last that long... but once saved some for mother in law.

not sure how soon mulberries start putting on the fruit.. but the cuttings i tried to root winter of 12-13 all started putting on the leaves and fruits before the roots and all croaked. hence getting a tree. easier that way.

I haven't tasted it. of three different mulberries,  M. alba, M. rubra, and M. nigra, M. nigra is said to be superior in taste by far. NdS and Black Beauty are both M. nigra. M. rubra, are the native red mulberries. M. alba are white mulberries, but the fruit doesn't necessarily be white.
